Phyllis Halcomb Pappas departed this life on Sunday, December 18, 2011 in her home peacefully, unexpectedly. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Anthony Pappas, Sr. and her parents Oscar Eli and Mary King Halcomb. One of seven children, she graduated from Howe High School and immediately began a 20-year career with L.S. Ayres department store (1947 to 1967) and served in varied roles that ranged from model to department manager, buyer, and associate buyers for departments such as the French and Crystal Rooms, juniors, swimwear, millinery and more. She was actively involved in varied organizations such at the Day Nursery, and served as president of the St. Vincent's Hospital Guild in 1972 and 1973. Phyllis will be remembered for her elegance, decorum, poise and humor by her friends and family. She is survived by her daughter Mary Lee Pappas and son, Johnny A. Pappas, Jr. A funeral mass will be on Friday, December 23, 11 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 5692 Central Ave., with calling at 10 a.m.
